This morning? A torrent of people hot-linking my images, stealing bandwidth. Asses. Went in and changed the .htaccess (Thanks [livejournal.com profile] misslynx for the advice!). Puts a stop to that nonsense.

Really getting tired of this.

Assuming you're on a UNIX server, try something like this:

http://www.xentrik.net/htaccess/antileech.php

I don't know if you've worked with .htaccess files before, but basically it's a text file at the root level of your web site (i.e. yoursite.com/.htaccess), which lets you configure various aspects of the way the web server handles your domain. Such as, in this instance, whether people can link to your images from other sites. :-)

Note that that if you want to be able to use images from your site on LJ, you'll need to add that to the list of approved domains. But thanks to their new structure with the subdomains, that doesn't mean the SA people can link to it from their LJs (if they have them) -- you can restrict it to morgandria.livejournal.com.

BTW, if your own computer is running Windows you won't be able to create a file called .htaccess there - you'll need to save it as htaccess.txt or something similar, then rename it to .htaccess when you upload it to the web server.

I'll have to have a look at it when the site actually comes up for me. I have .htaccess files on all my sites, so I don't imagine it'll be difficult to change.

Thanks! I wouldn't have known to do that.

And through the bitter cold,
with opened eyes
You’ll find the strength to fight
