My Siblings

I have three brothers. I am the oldest of the four of us. I'm also the shortest of us.

I honestly can't tell you much about my brothers as adults. I left home when I was 20 (which was late in my mind). My brothers were 17, 14, and 13. So I don't really feel like I know them like people.

We went through a lot of shit together. I was pretty much on point for anything coming our way, being the oldest, and I felt like that was my job. They drove me insane when I lived at home, but we pretty much only had each other for a long time.

I haven't ever understood why they like me as a person, to be honest. I was horrible to them when they were kids, and now I'm practically a stranger. But they don't seem to mind.

They've gotten on well as things go. Two of them are married now. One of them's got a brand new baby girl, which seems to make him very happy. They certainly do enough to keep my mother busy worrying, and they're close enough to her that she sees them fairly often. In general I need more space from my family than that, but I do sort of miss having my brothers around.

Manannan

You know, I realize sitting here answering this that I have absolutely -no-idea exactly when Manannan arrived in my life. Absolutely none! I'm sure it was during the time I was exploring Irish Reconstructionism, but I can't pinpoint anything as an 'a-ha!' moment.

I think Manannan, in my mind, is something like a divine version of Brian Blessed. He is a solid presence, a very witty one, but blunt as fuck and not slow to speak his mind.

I love the patterns and wonders of weather far too much to not honour Manannan in my practices. I tend to feel his presence most strongly in the time around Summer Solstice, when the summer storms are just starting to roll through. He also keeps the Ways Between, the doors between this world and the Otherworld, and so is important to me as I try to walk in both worlds.
One day you’ll walk the world
and keep in mind
The heart you’ve been given
in winter time
And through the bitter cold,
with opened eyes
You’ll find the strength to fight
and stand upright
