Jul. 10th, 2007 03:57 pmI sat outside about 40 minutes ago and watched as the leading edge of a storm blew overhead. I was greeted by alarm calls from the local corvids as I stepped out the door, and watched as the sky grew darker. Hawks and crows and gulls were kiting along the front of the winds, swirling and dancing in and out of sight high up in the air. As it came closer, I could see the rotation in the clouds. I was thinking "Holy shit" the whole time, knowing I should go in as I couldn't count to two between the red-purple lightning bolts and the thunder, but I just couldn't make myself go back down into my troll-hole. I just couldn't help feeling that the second I turned my back a tornado would drop down out of the bulging belly of the beast, and I would have missed it.
But it slid by, growing and feeding on the lake, and when the rain started to come down I slipped inside and sat on the bed with my rather upset cats, listening to water thumping my windows like a panicked bird.
Now the outside will swelter - the humidity is unbelievable right now - and I will remain in my dark basement...but I remember the wind, and the ozone in the air, and the eerie silver glow, and I'll be flying with the other birds on the edge of the storm.
