Feb. 15th was the Roman holiday of Lupercalia. The Luperci, two young men acting as priests and assisted by the Vestal Virgins, would offer to Lupa (the wolf who suckled Romulus and Remus) a goat and a dog. The blood would be smeared on them, and then washed away with wool dipped in milk. They would then run naked through the streets, slapping women along the route with thongs of the bloody goathide, to promote fertility. Later on, the available women of the city would place their names in a jar, and the men would each choose a name, and pair off with them. This rite was usually accompanied by a lot of drinking and partying.
