I buried Tardy at twilight, under the branches of the old hawthorn in the yard. It's blooming right now, long white fingers of flowers. I was sad, thinking it was the first time he'd ever been outside. :( I also interred his sibling and half-sibling, both stillborn when the ground was still frozen. They had no personality, no relationship to me at all...no connection. But they still deserved to be buried properly, so I did.

I opened the gates to the west, asked Morrigan to guide Tardy to Manannan's gates, asked Manannan to send him through...asked his ancestors and mine to take him home and help him forget his pain.
It was simple, and somehow elegant, but heartbreaking.

I asked his spirit to come back when it was ready. As I was cleaning up the incense smoke slid around in the lantern-light, and I could have sworn I saw the shadows of kittens scampering away.

It seems so quiet here now.

The burial ritual sounds like it was beautiful. It reminds me a bit of the one we did for Ladyjane's cat Wonton when he died last year.
